The mother of one of the friends on the trip with Nolan Wells is Jackson County Chancery Court Judge Ashlee Cole. It has been alleged that there is a possible cover-up, including alleged payoffs to his friends so they will not speak. Nolan’s mother is a grieving mother trying to get to the truth about what happened to her son, and his father is a heartbroken man seeking answers for his son’s untimely death as well.

Tyler Perry paid for the funeral, and other celebrities intervened to help give his family support. When it comes to the deaths of young African American men who have white friends, history shows that those white friends never go to jail. Historical patterns show that Black boys killed by white friends never result in those friends going to jail. Nolan was a college-bound young man from Mississippi. On the boat, Nolan was the only one who did not make it back.

Stephen A. Smith interviewed Nancy Grace, a former prosecutor who is now the host of Crime Stories. All day long, Nancy investigates deaths and mayhem. In the segment titled “Nancy Grace Demands Truth in Nolan Wells Tragedy,” she emphasized that this matter must be treated with the utmost seriousness. If a murder is concealed, the perpetrator may feel emboldened, believing they can commit similar acts again and potentially harm others in the future. Everyone involved in a potential cover-up should be held accountable and charged.

When it comes to Black boys, sheriffs are often in a rush to shut investigations down without full closure of what really happened. Nancy said on Stephen A. Smith’s program that the story of Nolan’s death is very murky. According to Nancy Grace, the Mississippi sheriff is requesting that all platforms stop covering the investigation and allow it to be shut down. She noted that it is possible Nolan’s death was caused by an accident, yes, it is possible. It is also possible that it was foul play, yes, it is possible.

Nancy Grace and Noneillah believe the case should not be shut down. We need to know the answers to what really happened to Nolan and why someone took him from his mother and father. “I will be lying on the courthouse steps screaming for justice,” says Nancy. "I don’t understand where all the hate is coming from,” says Nancy.

Who specifically is calling for the shutdown of the case? In the interview with Stephen A. Smith, Nancy said people (white people) called her a “Nigg _ _” (fill in the blank). Stephen asked Grace who told her they should stop the investigation into his death. She replied that there are thousands of people who said it was an accidental drowning and asked, “Why are you doing this? You are a race-baiter.” She responded that this has nothing to do with the color of the white boys’ skin. This has to do with unanswered questions from her prosecutorial career. She said she was the only white person in the courtroom at times, and that had nothing to do with Lady Justice. What Lady Justice wants is what justice demands: a full and fair investigation. She is not saying there is no investigation going on. The question is whether there is an honest, thorough, and complete investigation.

Nancy says we are not owed an explanation from law enforcement about what they are doing.

There are a lot of questions regarding the autopsy, said Nancy. The initial autopsy remains under seal. We do not know what the answers were. The family of Nolan sent his body hundreds of miles away for a second opinion. When the doctor received the body, the lungs and throat were missing. I understand why the lungs might be missing in a possible drowning case. But why the throat? asks Nancy Grace. What about Nolan’s throat? That is what the original medical examiner should explain. This leaves me to speculate, says Nancy. Was there bruising? Was the hyoid bone fractured? Was it broken? Was it dislodged? Was there possibly bruising on the strap muscles? Is it indicative of a blow? We know that on the back of the head is the occipital bone, where the hairline starts. There is deep discoloration under the subcutaneous tissue. Is it from a blow? Is it from the diffusion of blood postmortem? I do not know. But none of it is good, so we need answers before any investigation is shut down.

In a number of cases, families and community advocates have questioned decisions to classify deaths as accidents, self-inflicted, or the result of other circumstances without what they believe to be a full and independent investigation.

As a Noneillah research blogger, I respectfully disagree with Nancy Grace on one point. While law enforcement is not always able to publicly disclose every detail during an active investigation, we believe the public deserves transparency and accountability because law enforcement officers are public servants who serve the people. Judges, prosecutors, government attorneys, police officers, sheriffs, and other public officials are entrusted with significant authority, and with that authority comes a responsibility to uphold the United States Constitution and the rule of law.

We believe that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and that government exists to serve the people, not the other way around. Taxpayer dollars fund public institutions and the salaries of public officials. Therefore, we believe those officials should remain accountable to the citizens they serve and should strive to conduct investigations that are honest, impartial, and thorough.

The answer may depend on where people are looking. While mainstream audiences often hear the same names repeatedly, the underground scene continues to produce skilled women who are pushing the culture forward without the benefit of major-label promotion.
